Designing Your London Kitchen: An Expert's Guide

Jan 9th, 2020 3:44 pm

Getting a new kitchen isn’t something that you do very often. And so, it’s no surprise that when they do, many people have questions about how to do it and what to expect. Here at Stonehouse, designing bespoke kitchens is what we do, and so we consider ourselves to be experts on the process from start to finish.

When you get a bespoke kitchen, you part with substantial amounts of your hard-earned money, so it is only right that you get exactly what you need and want, the kitchen of your dreams which will last you for years to come.
With this in mind, here are some considerations that you should think about if you are looking to get a new, bespoke kitchen.

Know what you want

Before you begin the design process it is important to know what you are looking for in a kitchen. London homes lend themselves well to having an open plan kitchen – regardless of whether you’re in an old-style London townhouse or a converted warehouse flat. In both circumstances, an open plan kitchen can be used to cook, entertain, spend time with the family and relax, not only potentially saving your space, but also allowing you to spend more time with the rest of the family.

If you are struggling with ideas you could look at magazines, websites and visit our London showroom for inspiration.
It makes it much easier to design a kitchen – and much more likely that you’ll love it if you know what you want from your kitchen, how you intend to use it and (even if only roughly) what you want it to look like.

How much is a bespoke kitchen?

It is impossible to answer this question without knowing exactly what you are looking for in your bespoke kitchen. Do you want granite work surfaces, appliances hidden behind your cabinetry, stand-alone bespoke furniture, integrated storage space, open shelves, what size hob, what size fridge, boiling water taps… the list is endless…

And this is why we cannot give you an answer to how much it will cost. It is important, however, to know how much money you want to spend and to communicate this with your bespoke kitchen designer. They will then be able to lay out the options that you have to enable you to stay within your budget.

How much input over the design can I have?

As you are getting a bespoke kitchen you can have as much input as you’d like. Some people would prefer to leave it to the experts once they have decided on their brief, whereas others would like to be heavily involved with the design of their kitchen.

It is important that you have a designer who understands what you want and need, and you can work with them to create the kitchen that you have always wanted – there’s no point in having a bespoke kitchen if not!

Of course, it is important to remember that there will be certain aspects of your kitchen which you or your designer might not have control over – structural issues, for example. But they will do their utmost to ensure that your kitchen is as close to perfect as it can get. In London, you might be constrained by planning regulations or your proximity to neighbours, for example.

How long does it take to get a bespoke kitchen from start to finish?

Although it is impossible to say exactly how long it can take to complete, and being located in London you would certainly be able to get what you need quickly, it is still advisable to expect at least six months for your bespoke kitchen to be designed and fitted.
It is important that you don’t rush the design process to ensure that you get a kitchen that flows, works functionally for you and looks great.

What new technology is there?

Technology moves faster than London’s pace of life and we are always seeing new kitchen technology coming out, making our busy lives easier, enabling us to spend more quality time with our loved ones.

Whether you’re looking for the latest smart fridge, super quiet extractor fans, tablet ports for recipes, voice-activated taps or a smart, self-cleaning oven door, our designers have their fingers on the pulse of what’s hitting the market, what’s popular and what might be an asset to your kitchen.

Designing a bespoke kitchen is like creating the kitchen of your dreams. With the help of an expert designer, you can ensure that you get a kitchen just how you imagined – or better.
